UL and P.E.P Association Announce Mutual Recognition of Environmental Declarations to Help Manufacturers Access to Global Markets
Paris, EU, July 11, 2018 – Today, UL and the P.E.P Association (Product Environmental Profile) announced a mutual recognition agreement between the two organizations’ environmental certification programs for electrical, electronic and HVAC-R (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, refrigeration) products.
Under this agreement, manufacturers that have earned an independent third-party verified PEP ecopassport® declaration may also be granted use of UL’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Mark without undergoing additional confirmation and be listed on UL’s SPOT® database. Both programs are designed to provide an international reference framework to determine the environmental impact of products throughout their life-cycle, and both require verification that is conducted in accordance with international standards for type III environmental declarations and life cycle assessment, including ISO 14025, 14040 and 14044.
“Upon comparing the two programs’ rigorous requirements, we agreed that mutual recognition would benefit both manufacturers and buyers. UL is excited to partner with the P.E.P Association in a move toward our ultimate goal of harmonizing global environmental standards that make it easier for manufacturers to create products with reduced environmental impact,” said Giuseppe Barisan, general manager for UL’s Environment division in Europe.
“We believe that manufacturers of HVAC-R, electrical, and electronic equipment will benefit from access to two labels that are recognized internationally to communicate their compelling environmental accomplishments to buyers in different marketplaces,” said Bertrand Hugoo, president of P.E.P Association.
Manufacturers of products like wires and cabling, heating, air conditioning and lighting equipment, self-contained emergency lighting systems and ventilation and air treatment equipment can benefit from this program and signal with either or both labels that they are delivering high quality product environmental impact information to market.
